Tencent boss: WeChat service charge is rumor
Aggregated Source: Shanghai Daily: Business

TENCENT Holding Chairman Ma Huateng yesterday denied media reports that the country's three major telecom operators are going to charge its popular smartphone chatting tool, WeChat.
Ma, who was in Beijing for the annual meeting of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the news was fabricated.
"WeChat has boosted users' demand for data traffic, which is good for telecom operators. It's impossible for them to charge (WeChat)," Ma was quoted by Beijing News today.
China National Radio reported earlier this week that China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom are in talks to regulate and charge WeChat which has over 300 million users.
Executives of the three telecom carriers said they were not aware of the talks and had no idea where the information came from, Beijing News said.
Bao Ran, a member of the China Interactive Media Industry Alliance, said WeChat has eroded the income of the three telecom operators with functions that allow users to have real-time video conversation. WeChat also caused massive data traffic and frequent interruption of calls.
