上Fi: Doubling Down on 3G

China Tech News reports:

A representative from China Mobile (CHL) Shanghai has told the local media that they’ve prepared to build 1500 TD-SCDAM based stations in Shanghai starting this month.

China Mobile plans to bring the total number of TD base stations in Shanghai to about 3000 by the end of this year to make the city fully covered by the 3G signal. In addition, Shanghai Mobile says that it will advance its wireless broadband index — apart from realizing a complete coverage of 2.75G network over the city and building more than 3000 3G base stations, it will also push forward the city’s wireless construction with such advanced wireless broadband technologies as Wi-Fi and HSDPA.

The TD-SCDMA network will expand with HSDPA, so there’s plenty of mobile broadband to go around. I wasn’t aware China Mobile was going to beef up its GSM network with EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), hopefully improving service. I used to have China Mobile and could only talk in certain parts of my living room. Since I switched to China Unicom I have now had to move to other certain parts of my living room.

But all this gets blown out the door by Beijing’s shiny new free (for now) WiFi network. Shanghai Daily:

INTERNET users in Beijing will have faster, easier access to the cyber world when the “wireless Beijing” program goes into full swing, Sina.com reported today.

The service will be offered free of charge during the Olympic, the report said.

CECT-Chinacomm Communications, the service provider, will implement the plan in three phases. The first phase began trial operations today and covers an area of 100 square kilometers.

The second phase is scheduled to finish in 2009 and the final phase will be completed in 2010 with the creation of a citywide wireless network, the report said.

…However, the report didn’t say how much the service will cost.

According to the plan, CECT-Chinacomm Communications will build 9,000 wireless access points in public areas and 150 WiMAX stations by the end of 2009, providing Wi-Fi services on more than 90 percent of streets in Beijing.

Danwei said they could see it, but couldn’t get it on.
