Midler Knows Japan

Or at least he knows something about the US-PRC-Japan security dynamic. On The China Game, Paul first asks:

Japan shot down a ballistic missile in space, high over the Pacific Ocean. This was done in coordination with the United States, and the only thing we can wonder is what China makes of all this.

He then answers his own question:

The Japan-US missile test is said to be about North Korea, but I can’t help but think this is just as much, if not more, about China.

Since this is obviously 99% about China, and possibly 1% about North Korea, China cannot be pleased. Muted reaction from Beijing tells you that this is a serious issue, and not one deserving of stupid public displays of useless rhetoric.

In the last few years, when push comes to shove, Japan has chosen the U.S. This is additional evidence of that continued dynamic.

I will take this opportunity to once again express my opinion that U.S. attempts to establish an anti-ballistic missile system, whether in the European or Asian theatres, is stupid and provocative. It was ill-advised in the 1980s and it is a waste of resources and a bad diplomatic move now. Pissing off the Russians and Chinese for dubious gains only makes sense if you are a serious nutjob like John Bolton or Richard Perle.

OK, glad I got that off my chest. I am not a defense or security expert, so I don’t venture into this area very often.
