Marbridge Consulting identified the purchaser of the majority stake in TCL:

Yesterday evening, a notice issued by ST TCL stated that Changda Technology Industries will pay RMB 40 mln to the TCL Group and RMB 20 mln in capital to TCL Computer for an 82% stake in TCL Computer. Under the agreement, Changda may use the TCL brand name in its computer business for three consecutive years without fees and for a fee of 0.75% of revenues thereafter.

Wang Daoyuan, Changda company controller and current director of TCL Communication Technology Co., Ltd., holds shares worth RMB 548 mln in TCL Communication.

Changda Technology & Industry?

And who might they be? I haven’t the foggiest. Whoever they are, they’re in for a tough slog. The PC market in China is very competitive. Tier one vendors are Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Second tier includes Founder, Tsinghua Tongfeng, Acer, Haier, etc., etc. There are a lot of established firms and aggressive new entrants such as Haier.

Maybe Changda has the assembly, distribution, and branding expertise to turn TCL around. Or maybe Mr. Wang is looking out for his TCL investment.
