Asian Markets Thursday: Japan Jumps, China Falls on Yuan Concerns

Japan posted a second-straight day of strong gains, with the Nikkei 225 index closing up 1.7%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was up 0.7%, while China's Shanghai composite index fell 0.2% on the heels of a the yuan's biggest drop against the dollar since China freed it from its dollar peg in 2005. Traders took Wednesday's strong productivity and employment reports (full story) as a sign U.S. recessionary worries may be overblown.
