I’ve allowed my inbox to sorta fill up over the past few days. Lots of interesting tidbits stuck in there, including a few stories on a UN AIDS report that was published last week.

Quite a few blogs and papers picked up the story, and it’s actually rather interesting to see who emphasized what, and particularly what sort of headlines each story was given.

Here are two stories that were snuggled next to each other in my inbox, believe it or not:

China Increases Estimate of People With HIV

China Reports Sharp Drop in HIV/AIDS Cases

My tired brain couldn’t really get around these two headlines, and the details didn’t help all that much.

To wit, the 1st article from the IHT:

The number of people estimated to be living with HIV in China has risen to 700,000, says a report released Thursday by the United Nations and the Chinese government.

And the second, from the Globe & Mail, citing Xinhua:

China has 223,501 people infected with HIV, the official Xinhua News Agency said today, a sharp drop from previously reported figures.

I suppose I could just look up the UN report and get the real number, but I am having too much fun trying to reconcile these two stories. Maybe the Xinhua story had a typo in it?
