China’s Internet Users: Leaps, Bounds, Surges, Jumps, Blah, Blah, Blah

Shanghai Daily reports:

THE number of Internet users in China will surpass that of the United States and become the world’s largest before the end of 2008, a senior official with the Ministry of Information Industry said yesterday.

And how fast is that number growing?

The number of netizens jumped 31.7 percent in China by the end of June, ranking second in the world next to the United States with 211 million, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.

CNNIC’s report has the 162 million users as of the end of June. It’s my guess that this number (a little more than 10% of the population) is too small. Something like 40% of the population now lives in urban areas. Virtually all of them have the ability (although perhaps not the desire or money) to access the internet via cafes.
