Number of Chinese Students in US at Record High

The Shanghai Daily reports:

THE number of Chinese studying in the US has reached a new high, the US Consulate General in Shanghai announced yesterday.

And people from Shanghai have a better chance of getting a US visa than residents of any other part of China.

Officials said the consulate issued student visas to 88 percent of applicants in the past year up to September 30.

Outside Shanghai China's average rate for successful student visa applications is 71 percent.

In the past year, the local consulate issued 15,767 student visas, a 31-percent increase for the year. Overall, the US issued 40 percent more student visas to Chinese students.

Consulate statistics reveal that the total number of Chinese students in the US higher education system increased by 8.2 percent during the 2006/2007 academic year to reach 67,723, a record high.
