Symantec and Huawei Have a Little Chat

China Tech News reports:

John Thompson, chairman and CEO of Symantec (SYMC), has disclosed at Symantec’s Greater China Client Meeting that he will have an informal meeting with Huawei’s president Ren Zhengfei to discuss issues regarding a joint venture company between the two parties.

Huawei is acquiring a minority share in 3Com, and their previous sales, distribution, and technology agreements will be extended next year. Symantec doesn’t really compete directly with 3Com, but there has to be some concern about Huawei’s long-term strategy. With one joint venture and a minority partnership that overlap slightly can Huawei fit both into its long-term plans?

Security technology is changing from a specific product to a secondary function of a technology solution. Huawei has made its money providing data connectivity solutions. What plans do they have to provide that secondary function? I’m sure that’s what Symantec wants to know.
